چکیده
Abstract. Naturally and anthropogenically emitted aerosols, which are determined by their physical chemical properties, have an impact on both air quality the radiative properties of earth. An important source atmospheric particulate matter (PM) in South Africa is household combustion for space heating cooking, predominantly occurs low-income urban settlements. The aim this study was to conduct a detailed size-resolved assessment characteristics aerosols associated with through collection particulates settlements quantify extent impacts pollution. Outdoor (ambient) indoor different size fractions were collected during summer winter four located north-eastern interior African Highveld, i.e. Kwadela, Kwazamokuhle, Zamdela, Jouberton. Mass concentration composition three fractions, namely, PM1, PM2.5, PM2.5−10. highest concentrations measured indoors mass PM2.5−10 (coarse) fraction. However, PM1 all outdoor aerosol samples summer, summer. Significantly higher SO4-2 compared other ionic species, NH4+ NO3- being second most abundant. almost exclusively occurred fraction, while major constituent larger fractions. levels recorded campaigns conducted at campaign. combined trace elements total element substantially than thereof two sampling campaigns. According estimated dust concentrations, it indicated that ranges study, made contribution PM1−2.5 mass. reflect regional anthropogenic influence sources.

Urban Settlements: Case Studies in South Africa
Internationally, settlement informality (informal housing and informal settlements) is increasing, not decreasing. Thus, according to United Nations estimates, there are currently 924 million people living in various forms of slums and unauthorized or informal settlements (UN Habitat, 2003, p2). In Sub-Saharan Africa 71,9% of urban dwellers lived in slums (ibid). In South Africa, official gover...

OBJECTIVES To establish whether a specific community in a gold mining area, with potentially associated small-scale gold mining activities, was exposed to mercury. METHODS The community was situated in Mpumalanga, where some potential sources of mercury emissions may have an impact. Adults >or=18 years were considered eligible. Biological monitoring, supported by questionnaires, was applied. ...
متن کاملFood insecurity in households in informal settlements in urban South Africa.
Food insecurity in the urban poor is a major public health challenge. The Health, Environment and Development study assessed trends in food insecurity and food consumption over a period of 7 years in an informal settlement in Johannesburg, South Africa (SA). Annual cross-sectional surveys were conducted in the informal settlement (Hospital Hill). The degree of household food insecurity decrease...

The objectives of the study were to provide quantitative information on the material benefits generated from urban farming in order to assess the contribution of this activity to the food security and nutrition of participating households and to explore the meaning of urban agriculture in the livelihood of participants. The study was conducted in five informal settlements of Atteridgeville, Pre...
متن کامل‘Men value their dignity’: securing respect and identity construction in urban informal settlements in South Africa
BACKGROUND Urban informal settlements remain sites of high HIV incidence and prevalence, as well as violence. Increasing attention is paid on how configurations of young men's masculinities shape these practices through exploring how men build respect and identity. In this paper, we explore how young Black South Africans in two urban informal settlements construct respect and a masculine identi...
